Grinding rattle on a cold start
On Honda's K-series four-cylinder in models like the CR-V and Accord, a brief grinding rattle on a cold start that fades as the engine warms is a classic sign of a worn VTC actuator.
V6 timing belts
Honda's V6 uses a timing belt, not a chain, and the belt drives the water pump too. Honda's interval runs to around 105,000 miles on many models. Ignore it and a broken belt can wreck the engine.
VCM on the 3.5 V6
Accords (2008–2012), Odysseys (2008–2013) and Pilots (2009–2013) with Variable Cylinder Management were the subject of a class action over misfires, oil burning and fouled spark plugs.
Rear brakes on newer models
On the 2017-and-newer CR-V, the electronic parking brake needs a scan tool to put the rear calipers into maintenance mode, and again to put them back. We bring the tool.

Honda owners ask
My CR-V grinds for a second on cold starts. Is it serious?
It's a well-known VTC actuator sign on the K-series engine. Not an emergency, but get it checked before it wears the timing chain parts.
Can you do rear brakes on a new CR-V?
Yes. We use a scan tool for the parking brake maintenance mode, which that model requires.
Will using you void my Honda warranty?
No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer or dealer can't deny your warranty coverage just because maintenance or repairs were done by an independent mechanic. Keep your receipts. Repairs the warranty itself pays for still go to the dealer.
