Car won't start? Listen to what it's telling you
Before you call, listen. Rapid clicking, a single click, slow cranking, normal cranking that never catches, or total silence: each one points somewhere different, and knowing which you've got saves time.

Narrow it down
What it usually means
Rapid clicking, or nothing at all
The battery hasn't got enough left to turn the starter, or a terminal has worked loose or corroded. A jump may get you going, but a battery that's let you down once in Tampa heat usually does it again.
One click, and the dash stays bright
Power is getting to the starter, but the engine isn't turning. That's the classic starter sign, although a bad cable or ground connection can look exactly the same.
Slow, labored cranking
A tired battery, corroded cables or a poor ground. A worn starter that has heat-soaked after a drive can also crank slowly, then work fine once it cools.
It cranks normally but never fires
The starter is doing its job, so the problem is fuel, spark or the anti-theft system. Some no-starts have a known cause, like the power module fuel pump relay recalled on 2011–2013 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos.
Push-button car says the key isn't detected
A weak key fob battery is the usual suspect. Many cars have a backup: hold the fob against the start button, or put it in a marked spot. Your owner's manual shows where.
A guide, not a diagnosis. Two cars with the same symptom can have different faults, which is what testing is for.
Worth knowing
Before you spend money
- Watch the dash while you try to start: lights that dim, stay bright or flicker are the single most useful clue.
- Starts cold, but not after a drive in the afternoon heat? Tell us. That pattern points at the starter.
- Jumped it and it died again within minutes? That's charging, not just the battery. More on charging problems.
- Stuck somewhere unsafe? Skip the forms and call.
Questions
Asked about this one
Can you fix a car that won't start where it's parked?
Usually, yes. Batteries, starters and most no-start faults get tested and fixed right where the car sits, whether that's a garage, an apartment lot or the curb.
Do I need a tow?
Often not. We test it where it sits first. If it turns out to be a job that can't be done at the car, we'll tell you straight before you spend anything more.
How much does it cost to find out why it won't start?
The diagnostic is $125, and it goes toward your repair if we do the work.
