BMW issues worth knowing
Battery registration
Fit a new battery in a BMW without registering it and the car keeps charging it like the old one. It can over- or undercharge, and start-stop can stop working. We register every battery we fit.
Oil filter housing gasket
On the N51, N52, N54 and N55 six-cylinders, a leaking oil filter housing gasket can drip oil onto the serpentine belt. A soaked belt can slip off and get pulled into the front crank seal. Fix the leak early.
CBS and wear sensors
BMW tracks brake wear in its Condition Based Service system and uses pad wear sensors that are single-use once triggered. New pads get the reset and a new sensor where needed.
"Drivetrain malfunction"
This message means an engine or transmission fault and may come with reduced power. Spark plugs, coils, the fuel pump and injectors are common causes.
Brand guides, not a diagnosis. Two cars with the same symptom can have different faults, which is what testing is for.

Do you register BMW batteries?
Every time. It's included in the $125 battery labor.
Can you reset the brake service light?
Yes, as part of a brake job. New pads get the CBS reset and new wear sensors where needed.
Will using you void my BMW warranty?
No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer or dealer can't deny your warranty coverage just because maintenance or repairs were done by an independent mechanic. Keep your receipts. Repairs the warranty itself pays for still go to the dealer.
